Black-throated Trogon (Trogon rufus) [XC521110]
by Mauricio Álvarez-Rebolledo (Colección de Sonidos Ambientales - Instituto Humboldt) from PNN Chiribiquete, cuñaré, Colombia (?)

Subspecies
Possibly closest to Mountain Trogon (Trogon mexicanus), Elegant Trogon (Trogon elegans), Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris), Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus) and Blue-crowned Trogon (Trogon curucui). DNA studies suggest that Elegant Trogon (Trogon elegans), Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris) and Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus) may be nearest relatives.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

• tenellus Cabanis, 1862 - Eastern Honduras, Nicaragua, both slopes of Costa Rica (except north-west) and Panama, and extreme north-western Colombia.
• cupreicauda (Chapman, 1914) - Western Colombia and western Ecuador.
• rufus Gmelin, 1788 - Eastern Venezuela and the Guianas to northern Brazil (R Negro region and Amapá).
• sulphureus von Spix, 1824 - South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and western Brazil.
• amazonicus Todd, 1943 - North-central Brazil (lower Amazon Valley).
• chrysochloros Pelzeln, 1856 - Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and eastern and south-eastern Brazil (Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, and including Mato Grosso); presumably this subspecies in north-eastern Brazil (Alagoas).
