Subspecies
Trogon melanurus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) has been split into Black-tailed Trogon (Trogon melanurus) and Trogon mesurus following SACC (2009).

Closest relatives may be Slaty-tailed Trogon (Trogon massena), Lattice-tailed Trogon (Trogon clathratus) and Choco Trogon (Trogon comptus). Probably forms a parapatric species pair with Choco Trogon (Trogon comptus). Sometimes thought to include subspecies australis of Slaty-tailed Trogon (Trogon massena). Subspecies macroura sometimes suggested to be a distinct species, and subspecies australis of Slaty-tailed Trogon (Trogon massena) then regarded by some authors as belonging therein. Birds from Amazonian Brazil sometimes separated as subspecies occidentalis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • macroura Gould, 1838   -  Central Panama (east of Canal Zone) to northern Colombia and extreme north-western Venezuela.
  • mesurus (Cabanis and Heine, 1863)   -  Western Ecuador and north-western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ecuadorian Trogon (Trogon mesurus).
  • melanurus Swainson, 1838   -  East of Andes from Colombia east through Venezuela to the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (Maranhío).
  • eumorphus Zimmer, JT, 1948   -  Amazon Basin from eastern Ecuador and Peru east to north-central Brazil (to east of Manaus), south to northern Bolivia.
  • occidentalis Pinto, 1950   -  South-eastern Brazil (São Paulo region).
