Northern, western and southern Madagascar.

Food
Large insects, including their larvae and pupae. Also reptiles and amphibians.

Voice
A low, far-carrying, mellow 'oo-oo-oo' song. Cawing in contact.

Nest
In a hole of a tree, but occasionaly in a hole in a building or wall, sometimes lined with grass.

Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 7 - 8
Color: greyish-olive, marked with pores.

Subspecies
Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops) and African Hoopoe (Upupa africana) have been lumped into Upupa epops, but Madagascar Hoopoe (Upupa marginata) has been split from this taxon following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops).

No subspecies.
