Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged with Ceratogymna.

Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus) and White-thighed Hornbill (Bycanistes albotibialis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include White-thighed Hornbill (Bycanistes albotibialis) as a subspecies of Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus).

Distinctive subspecies albotibialis, with discrete range, possibly a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

cylindricus (Temminck, 1824) - Sierra Leone east to Togo.
albotibialis (Cabanis and Reichenow, 1877) - Humid forests of Benin to Angola and Uganda.
