Habitat loss through logging and agricultural conversion is the main threat. Hunting and trapping may also be a problem.

Subspecies
Anorrhinus tickelli (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Tickell's Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus tickelli) and Austen's Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) following Rasmussen and Anderton (2005).
Forms superspecies with Austen's Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) and are often considered conspecific, but differ in some features of plumage and in presence or absence of sexual dimorphism in bill colour.
