Subspecies
Notharchus macrorhynchos (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Guianan Puffbird (Notharchus macrorhynchos), White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus) and Buff-bellied Puffbird (Notharchus swainsoni) following SACC (2005).
Forms a superspecies with Buff-bellied Puffbird (Notharchus swainsoni), with which usually regarded as conspecific. Subspecies hyperrhynchus and paraensis markedly distinct from nominate, and together may constitute a separate species. Birds from El Salvador and north-western Nicaragua sometimes separated as subspecies cryptoleucus, but probably indistinguishable from hyperrhynchus. Population of Santa Marta Mts (northern Colombia) may represent a separate subspecies. Further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
hyperrhynchus (Gmelin, 1788) - Southern Mexico (Oaxaca) south to northern and north-eastern Venezuela, and south to Colombia, Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and western Brazil (east to R Tapajós and south to Mato Grosso). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus).
macrorhynchos (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - Extreme eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and extreme northern Brazil south to the Amazon.
paraensis Sassi, 1932 - Lower Amazon Valley in Brazil (Pará east of R Tapajós and into northern Maranhío).
