Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-tailed Jacamar (Galbula ruficauda), Green-tailed Jacamar (Galbula galbula), Coppery-chested Jacamar (Galbula pastazae) and Bluish-fronted Jacamar (Galbula cyanescens). Most closely related to Coppery-chested Jacamar (Galbula pastazae) and Bluish-fronted Jacamar (Galbula cyanescens). Differences between nominate subspecies and mentalis possibly clinal.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

tombacea Spix, 1824 - East of Andes in Colombia (south of Villavicencio, in Meta), north-eastern Ecuador (Napo), north-eastern Peru (Loreto), and western Brazil south of Amazon (east to Tonantins area).
mentalis Todd, 1943 - North-western Brazil on both banks of R Solim��es (east to R Negro and R Madeira).
