Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Blue-necked Jacamar (Galbula cyanicollis) and are sometimes considered conspecific, but no intergradation has been observed in zone of potential sympatry in R Ucayali Valley, north-eastern Peru, and their populations are otherwise separated by R Amazon almost throughout its length. Subspecies chalcocephala possibly a distinct species, as morphological differences from nominate subspecies considerable and apparently constant, with no intergrades known.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
albirostris Latham, 1790 - Eastern Colombia (Mitú, Vaupés), southern and eastern Venezuela (south of R Orinoco), the Guianas and northern Brazil (north of Amazon).
chalcocephala Deville, 1849 - South-eastern Colombia east of Andes (south of Meta), eastern Ecuador and western Brazil (upper R Negro) south to north-eastern Peru (south to upper R Ucayali); possibly also southern Venezuela (upper R Orinoco). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cerise-crowned Jacamar (Galbula chalcocephala).
