Subspecies
Anas aucklandica (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica), Brown Teal (Anas chlorotis) and Campbell Teal (Anas nesiotis) following Daugherty et al. (1999).

Forms superspecies with Chestnut Teal (Anas castanea). All subspecies have been proposed as full species, although nesiotis doubtfully separable from aucklandica. Population of South I has sometimes been assigned separate subspecies, peculiaris. Hybridization (subspecies chlorotis) recorded with Northern Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • chlorotis (Gray, 1844)   -  Isolated areas of North I and south-western South I, New Zealand; formerly more widespread. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Brown Teal (Anas chlorotis).
  • aucklandica (Gray, GR, 1844)   -  Islets off Auckland Is; formerly Auckland I.
  • nesiotis (Fleming, JH, 1935)   -  Rediscovered 1975 on Campbell Islands after considered extinct. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Campbell Teal (Anas nesiotis).
