Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, dry savanna, pastureland. From sea-level - 3,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Aruba, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico (B), Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Suriname, Venezuela.

Introduced to St Vincent and The Grenadines, Virgin Islands (U.S.) (E) (B) (NB).

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Often considered conspecific with Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon). Subspecies leucotis has been considered distinct species. Validity of several Venezuelan subspecies possibly in question, due to overlapping distribution and lack of barriers. Nominate subspecies sometimes subdivided, with recognition of subspecies continentis. Type locality of species questionable.

The following 20 subspecies are recognised:

  • mariae Wetmore, 1962   -  Chiriquí­ area, Panama.
  • panamensis Dickey & van Rossem, 1930   -  Pacific slope of western Panama.
  • decoratus (Todd, 1917)   -  Caribbean coast of Colombia.
  • cristatus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  North-eastern Colombia and north-western Venezuela, in and near Guajira Peninsula; Curaí§ao and Aruba, where possibly introduced.
  • littoralis (Todd, 1917)   -  Northern base of Santa Marta Mts, north-eastern Colombia.
  • badius Conover, 1938   -  Cauca Valley to western slope of western Andes, western Colombia.
  • leucotis (Gould, 1844)   -  Upper and middle sections of Magdalena Valley, and middle Sinú Valley, central Colombia.
  • bogotensis Dugand, 1943   -  Eastern Andes in Boyacá and Cundinamarca, north-central Colombia.
  • parvicristatus (Gould, 1843)   -  Central Colombia (eastern slope of eastern Andes in Boyacá and Cundinamarca, through Meta and llanos) to south-central Venezuela (north-western Bolí­var and northern Amazonas).
  • horvathi (Madarász, 1904)   -  Andes of Mérida, north-western Venezuela.
  • barnesi Gilliard, 1940   -  Portuguesa and Barinas, west-central Venezuela.
  • mocquerysi (Hartert, 1894)   -  Sucre, northern Monagas and northern Anzoátegui, north-eastern Venezuela.
  • sonnini (Temminck, 1815)   -  Carabobo and Caracas, north-central Venezuela, south through Orinoco Basin and Guianas to northern Brazil.
  • incanus Friedmann, 1944   -  Southern Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon).
  • hypoleucus (Gould, 1860)   -  Western El Salvador and adjacent Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon).
  • leucopogon (Lesson, 1842)   -  South-eastern El Salvador and western Honduras. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon).
  • leylandi (T. J. Moore, 1859)   -  North-western Honduras. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon).
  • sclateri (Bonaparte, 1856)   -  South-western and central Honduras to north-western Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon).
  • dickeyi Conover, 1932   -  North-western and central Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-bellied Bobwhite (Colinus leucopogon).
  • continentis Cory, 1913   -  Coastal north-western Venezuela, Aruba and Curaçao.
