Subspecies
Polyplectron bicalcaratum (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Grey Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron bicalcaratum) and Hainan Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron katsumatae) following Chang et al. (2008) and Collar (2009) on the basis of genetic and morphological differences.

Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Germain's Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron germaini).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • bakeri (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Hills of north-eastern India and Bhutan, from Sikkim east to Manipur, and maybe on into Burma.
  • bailyi Lowe, 1925   -  Unknown; thought to occur in western Assam or eastern Himalayas.
  • bicalcaratum (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Western and southern Burma east through central-southern China (western Yunnan) to north-western Vietnam and south-east to south-western Thailand (north of Isthmus of Kra).
  • ghigii Delacour and Jabouille, 1924   -  Northern and central Vietnam and central Laos.
  • katsumatae Rothschild, 1906   -  Hainan (southern China). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Hainan Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron katsumatae).
