Habitat
Primary, unlogged forest, disturbed and degraded habitats in close proximity to primary forest. From 650 - 2,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and fragmentation through agricultural encroachment and increasingly frequent drought fires, hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Subspecies hoogerwerfi sometimes considered a distinct species, but very poorly known, and male remains un­described and might not even merit subspecific status.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • hoogerwerfi (Salvadori, 1879)   -  Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sumatran Pheasant (Lophura hoogerwerfi).
  • inornata (Salvadori, 1879)   -  Mountains of southern Sumatra, south to Mt Dempu.


Similar Species
Female Sumatran Pheasant (Lophura hoogerwerfi) is darker, lacks prominent pale shaft streaks and pale blotching, and has darker grey legs, but males may be indistinguishable. Female Bornean Crested Fireback (Lophura ignita) has crest, longer tail and white scaling on underparts. Female Malay Crestless Fireback (Lophura erythrophthalma) lacks blue fringing to upperparts.
