Subspecies
Has alternatively been placed in genus Euplocamus. Subspecies rufa has been considered a distinct species. Subspecies macartneyi very variable, and perhaps an unstable form and might be hybrid of rufa and ignita. Subspecies sumatrana is synonym of macartneyi.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
rufa (Raffles, 1822) - Malay Peninsula (southern from Isthmus of Kra) and Sumatra (except south-east). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Crested Fireback (Lophura rufa).
macartneyi (Temminck, 1813) - South-eastern Sumatra, from area of Palembang south to Lampung.
ignita (Shaw, 1797) - Kalimantan (Borneo) and Bangka I (off south-eastern Sumatra).
nobilis (Sclater, PL, 1863) - Sarawak and Sabah (northern Borneo).
