Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
gingica (Gmelin, 1789) - Southern China.
guangxiensis Zhou, F & Jiang, AW, 2008 - South-eastern China (very local in northern and central Guangxi).
Similar Species
Chinese Chinese Bamboo-partridge (Bambusicola thoracicus) which is larger and longer-tailed with rufous face and throat, broad grey supercilium and bold, dark breast-side and flank spotting.
