Montane forest and forest edge, rocky and grassy mountain sides, tall grass savannas on mountain tops and gullies, rank growth and bracken. From 2,000 - 2,500 m.
Western Angola, from Cuanza Sul District to Huila District.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destuction and degradation through clearing and burning for subsistence farming is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Mount Cameroon Francolin (Pternistis camerunensis). Has been separated in genus Oreocolinus. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species. Francolinus cruzi is a synonym.
