Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland and shrubland, dry savanna. From 2,000 - 2,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia.

Central and western Kenya south through Tanzania to south-eastern Zaire (Musosa), north-eastern Zambia and Malawi.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Natal Francolin (Pternistis natalensis), with which occasional hybridization has been reported. Has at times been placed in genus Chaetopus, or alternatively in Notocolinus. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species. Proposed subspecies, such as johnstonii, not valid, as variation is clinal.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

altumi (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884) - Western Kenya.
hildebrandti (Cabanis, 1878) - Kenya to Tanzania, south-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, north-eastern Zambia, and southern Malawi.
johnstoni (Shelley, 1894) - South-eastern Tanzania, northern Mozambique, Malawi.
