Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. From 1,800 - 3,000 m.
Angola, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Ring-necked Francolin (Scleroptila streptophora), Finsch's Francolin (Scleroptila finschi) and Grey-winged Francolin (Scleroptila afra). Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Scleroptila with Ring-necked Francolin (Scleroptila streptophora), Finsch's Francolin (Scleroptila finschi), Grey-winged Francolin (Scleroptila afra), Moorland Francolin (Scleroptila psilolaema), Shelley's Francolin (Scleroptila shelleyi) and Orange River Francolin (Scleroptila gutturalis). Population of northern Malawi has been awarded separate subspecies, crawshayi, but validity doubtful.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- kikuyuensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1897) - Angola, Zambia, north-eastern and eastern Zaire east to west-central Kenya.
- levaillantii (Valenciennes, 1825) - Northern Malawi and north-eastern Zambia south to eastern South Africa.
- crawshayi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1896) - Northern Malawi.
