Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Moorland Francolin (Scleroptila psilolaema) and Shelley's Francolin (Scleroptila shelleyi). Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Scleroptila with Grey-winged Francolin (Scleroptila afra), Moorland Francolin (Scleroptila psilolaema), Ring-necked Francolin (Scleroptila streptophora), Red-winged Francolin (Scleroptila levaillantii), Shelley's Francolin (Scleroptila shelleyi) and Finsch's Francolin (Scleroptila finschi).

Several other subspecies have been described, but their validity is doubtful: pallidor and kalaharica normally included in nominate levaillantoides; cunenensis in jugularis; and archeri in lorti. Subspecies gutturalis (incorporating lorti) has been considered to constitute a separate species. Francolinus gariepensis is a synonym for present species.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • gutturalis (Smith, 1836)   -  Northern Ethiopia.
  • lorti (Sharpe, 1897)   -  Sudan east through southern Ethiopia to Somalia, and south to Uganda.
  • jugularis (Büttikofer, 1889)   -  South-western Angola and northern Namibia.
  • levaillantoides (A. Smith, 1836)   -  Eastern Namibia, southern Botswana, northern and western South Africa and Lesotho.
  • archeri (Sclater, WL, 1927)   -  Southern Ethiopia, south-eastern Sudan, northern Uganda, north-western Kenya.
  • pallidior (Neumann, 1908)   -  Northern Namibia.
  • levalliantoides (Smith, A, 1836)   -  Southern Botswana to eastern Namibia, Lesotho and northern South Africa.
