Subspecies
Rhynchotus rufescens (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Red-winged Tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) and Huayco Tinamou (Rhynchotus maculicollis) following SACC (2005).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
catingae Reiser, 1905 - Central and north-eastern Brazil.
rufescens (Temminck, 1815) - Northern Bolivia to eastern Brazil and south to eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and Uruguay.
pallescens Kothe, 1907 - North-eastern and central Argentina.
maculicollis G. R. Gray, 1867 - Andes of north-western Bolivia to north-western Argentina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Huayco Tinamou (Rhynchotus maculicollis).
