The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
caucae (Chapman, 1912) - Western Colombia (Pacific coast at Juradó, western slope of western Andes, and valleys of upper R Patía and upper R Cauca).
griseobarbatus (von Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1884) - Western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
pectoralis Zimmer, JT, 1941 - Northern Peru (middle Marañón Valley).
solimoensis Todd, 1931 - Eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru, and western Brazil (east to lower R Negro, south to upper R Juruá and R Purús).
vividior Hellmayr & Seilern, 1913 - Colombia (south to Meta), Venezuela, the Guianas, extreme northern Brazil, and Trinidad.
tobagensis Hellmayr, 1935 - Tobago.
agilis (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823) - Eastern Brazil (eastern from near Faro on northern bank of R Amazon and, on southern bank, from R Madeira) south to Rio de Janeiro.
diversus Zimmer, JT, 1941 - Eastern Paraguay, south-eastern Brazil and Uruguay.
