Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater (Sporophila torqueola).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
sharpei Lawrence, 1889 - Extreme southern USA (lower R Grande Valley, in southern Texas) and north-eastern Mexico (Nuevo León and Tamaulipas south through eastern San Luis Potosí to northern Veracruz). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater (Sporophila torqueola).
morelleti (Bonaparte, 1850) - Eastern Mexico (northern Veracruz) southern on Caribbean slope (including Mujeres I, off north-eastern Quintana Roo), and on Atlantic slope from El Salvador, to extreme western Panama.
