Brazil south of Amazon, eastern from R Tapajós in Pará, Maranhío and Piauí, and disjunctly from eastern Pernambuco south to Santa Catarina. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus).
