Andean slopes in southern Colombia (eastern slope of central range, western slope of eastern range in Huila, eastern slope of eastern range southern from Cauca and Caquetá), Ecuador (eastern slope) and northern Peru (north of R Marañón in Piura, Cajamarca and northern Amazonas). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-backed Fire-eye (Pyriglena leuconota).
