Breeds Russia (from at least R Pechora east to R Kolyma, possibly to R Anadyr), south to north-western Black Sea, northern Kazakhstan, north-western China, north-western Mongolia and L Baikal. Non-breeding southern Iraq, southern Iran and Arabia east to India and Bangladesh. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita).
