Breeds extreme north-eastern India, southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to south-western Sichuan and Yunnan) and probably northern Myanmar. Non-breeding south to west, central and eastern Myanmar and north-western and central Thailand. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Small Vivid Niltava (Niltava vivida).
