Southern of R Amazon in eastern Peru (eastern of R Huallaga), locally in western & Central Brazil (upper regions of tributaries of R Amazon and along lower R Tapajós, and east to southern Pará and SC Mato Grosso) and northern & Central Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a plumage variant of subspecies melanura of Black-throated Antbird (Myrmophylax atrothorax).
