Brazil south of R Amazon, from both banks of lower R Tapajós and eastern bank of R Teles Pires east to central Pará; not known to occur in area western towards R Madeira. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chestnut-belted Gnateater (Conopophaga aurita).
