Population
Estimated population is unknown (2012).
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) and Large-billed Sparrow (Passerculus rostratus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Passerculus sandwichensis following AOU (1998), which also includes beldingi, contra Stotz et al. (1996) who treat sandwichensis, rostratus and beldingi as separate species in the genus Ammodramus.
Genus sometimes subsumed in Ammodramus. Traditionally treated as conspecific with Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis), Belding's Sparrow (Passerculus guttatus) and Large-billed Sparrow (Passerculus rostratus), and apparently most closely related to Belding's Sparrow (Passerculus guttatus), but all differ in morphology and plumage and, to some extent, in ecology. Present species almost certainly reproductively isolated from those, and separation at species level supported by recent molecular-genetic findings.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis).
