Breeds north-central and north-eastern Siberia from lower R Yenisey east to western Chukotka and Kamchatka; southern limit uncertain but includes middle Angara basin, middle and upper R Podkamennaya Tunguska and upper R Lena, and possibly south to L Baikal, and extending east to at least upper Vitim. Non-breeding from north-eastern Indian Subcontinent east to Japan.

Subspecies

Frequently treated as conspecific with Naumann's Thrush (Turdus naumanni). Taxonomic separation based on very different phenotypic characters, but the two intergrade over wide area. Further study is required.
