Eastern European Russia (Ural Mts) east to north-central Siberia, south to Tarbagatay Mts and north-western Mongolia. Non-breeding south-western and southern Asia.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Often treated as conspecific with Rufous-throated Thrush (Turdus ruficollis). Taxonomic separation based on several very different phenotypic characters and considerable vocal differences, but the two intergrade over wide area. Further study is required.
