Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Agelaius or Chrysomus. Present species is closely related to Pale-eyed Blackbird (Agelasticus xanthophthalmus).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • xenicus (Parkes, 1966)   -  North-eastern Brazil (Amapá, north-eastern Pará and northern Maranhío); possibly also French Guiana.
  • beniensis (Parkes, 1966)   -  Northern Bolivia (Beni).
  • cyanopus Vieillot, 1819   -  Eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz) and central and southern Brazil (southern from Mato Grosso and western Sío Paulo) southern across Paraguay to north-eastern Argentina (south to north-eastern Buenos Aires) and western Uruguay.
  • atroolivaceus (zu Wied-Neuwied, 1831)   -  Coastal plain of eastern Brazil from Espí­rito Santo south to Paraná.
  • unicolor Swainson, 1838   -  North-eastern Brazil (Amapá to Pará and north-western Maranhão) south through central Brazil to north-western Paraná and western São Paulo; intergrades with atroolivaceus in southern São Paulo.
