Subspecies
Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rufescens Todd, 1912 - North-eastern Colombia (Guajira Peninsula eastern from Santa Marta) and western Venezuela (northern and south-eastern Zulia east to northern Lara and central Falcón).
orenocensis Lafresnaye, 1846 - Venezuela east of Andes from Cojedes and western Apure east to western Sucre and southern Monagas, to southern bank of R Orinoco in northern Bolívar and southern Delta Amacuro) and north-eastern Colombia (Arauca, probably also northern Vichada).
