Subspecies
Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae). Subspecies of present species weakly differentiated and differences possibly not constant and species perhaps better treated as monotypic.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
atripennis Sclater, 1856 - Colombia (both sides of western Andes and western slope of central Andes from Antioquia south to Nariño) and extreme north-western Ecuador (western Esmeraldas).
caniceps Chapman, 1914 - Disjunctly on western slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (Boyacá, Cundinamarca) and western Ecuador.
