Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest, subtropical and tropical dry forest. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • atriceps (Lesson, 1832)   -  Caribbean slope of Mexico from southern Tamaulipas southern (except south-eastern Veracruz and northern and central Yucatán Peninsula) to eastern Costa Rica.
  • suffuscus Wetmore, 1942   -  Sierra de Tuxtla, in south-eastern Veracruz (eastern Mexico).
  • raptor (Cabot, S, 1845)   -  South-eastern Mexico (Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo).
  • flavicrissus Griscom, 1937   -  Guerrero east to central Oaxaca, in south-western Mexico.
  • peeti Brodkorb, 1940   -  Pacific slope of eastern Oaxaca and Chiapas, in southern Mexico.
  • lacertosus Bangs, 1900   -  Eastern Costa Rica (Talamanca) and Panama (east to Canal Zone; one record in Darién).
