Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic research suggests that the Galapagos group consisting of present genus and Certhidea, Platyspiza and Geospiza, known collectively as "Darwin's finches", is allied to the tanagers (Thraupidae), being closest to Coereba, Tiaris and several Caribbean genera.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
habeli Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1870 - Pinta (formerly Abington I) and Marchena (Bindloe), in northern Galapagos Is.
affinis Ridgway, 1894 - Fernandina (Narborough) and Isabela (Albemarle), in western Galapagos Is.
psittacula Gould, 1837 - Santiago (James), Rábida (Jervis), Santa Cruz (Indefatigable), Santa Fe (Barrington) and Floreana (Charles), in central and southern Galapagos Is.
