Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes placed in tanager family (Thraupidae), with which perhaps has closer ancestral affinities. Appears to be part of a clade which also includes several other Caribbean genera (Loxipasser, Melopyrrha, Loxigilla, Melanospiza), Tiaris grassquits, Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola), and "Darwin's finches" (Certhidea, Platyspiza, Pinaroloxias, Camarhynchus, Geospiza).
