South-eastern Colombia (Guainía and Vaupés), southern Venezuela (Amazonas) and north-western Brazil (northern Amazonas east to Presidente Figueiredo); also southern Guyana.

Molecular work indicates that genus is very closely related to Sporophila and should perhaps be merged with it. Appears not to be close to Catamenia and some other genera with which it has been placed in the past.
