Subspecies
Molecular evidence suggests that genus is closely related to Oryzoborus, which should perhaps be subsumed within it. Further, that both genera should be placed in the tanager family (Thraupidae). Molecular-genetic data indicate that present species belongs in a clade with Rusty-collared Seedeater (Sporophila collaris), Black-and-white Seedeater (Sporophila luctuosa) and Yellow-bellied Seedeater (Sporophila nigricollis). Visual similarity suggests that it may be closest to White-throated Seedeater (Sporophila albogularis), but latter was not included in that study. Subspecies hellmayri formerly known as ornata, but that name invalid, as preoccupied.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • yungae Gyldenstolpe, 1941   -  Central Bolivia (La Paz, southern Beni and Cochabamba).
  • caerulescens (Vieillot, 1823)   -  South-eastern and eastern Bolivia, south-central and south-eastern Brazil south through Paraguay, Argentina (south to Mendoza and La Pampa) and Uruguay.
  • hellmayri Wolters, 1939   -  Southern Bahia, in eastern Brazil.
