Subspecies
Molecular evidence suggests that genus is closely related to Oryzoborus, which should perhaps be subsumed within it. Further, that both genera should be placed in the tanager family (Thraupidae).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
colombiana (Sharpe, 1888) - Southern Chocó, lower Magdalena Valley and Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
whiteleyana (Sharpe, 1888) - North-western, northern and central Venezuela (Sierra de Perija; Carabobo and Aragua; Bolívar and western Amazonas), llanos of eastern Colombia, the Guianas, and northern Brazil (Roraima, and Amapá east to mouth of R Amazon).
plumbea (Wied, 1831) - Extreme south-eastern Peru (Pampas del Heath), northern Bolivia (Pando, Beni, Santa Cruz and La Paz), Brazil south of Amazon (Mato Grosso east to Piauí and central Bahia, south to Paraná and northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
