Subspecies
Molecular data indicate that genus is sister to Emberizoides, and both appear to belong in tanager family (Thraupidae). This species sometimes placed in Emberizoides. Western "olivascens group" may merit elevation to species rank. In Argentina, nominate subspecies may be sympatric with gossei in Córdoba, but no details available.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • olivascens d'Orbigny, 1839   -  South-eastern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz south to eastern Potosí and western Tarija), western Paraguay, and north-western Argentina (Salta and Jujuy east to central Formosa, south through Córdoba).
  • catamarcana Nores, 1986   -  Central Catamarca, in north-western Argentina.
  • gossei Chubb, C, 1918   -  West-central Argentina (Mendoza, San Juan and San Luis).
  • platensis (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Lowlands of Beni, in northern Bolivia; central and eastern Paraguay, eastern Argentina (eastern Formosa, Chaco and Misiones south to Río Negro), south-eastern Brazil (southern from Minas Gerais) and Uruguay.
