(Bonaparte, 1851)

Habitat
Degraded areas, including burnt areas of campo rupestre, orchards, old pastures and abandoned mines. From 600 - 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil (B).

Southern interior Brazil from central Mato Grosso east to southern Goiás, Minas Gerais and northern Sío Paulo.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

New molecular data indicate that genus forms a clade with the tanager (Thraupidae) genera Hemispingus and Thlypopsis, and that Compsospiza, which often subsumed within this genus, is sister to that clade. Until recently this species was treated as conspecific with Black-capped Warbling-Finch (Microspingus melanoleucus).

Similar Species
White-banded Tanager (Neothraupis fasciata) has an obvious black mask and immatures are strongly tinged brown.
