Subspecies
New molecular data indicate that genus forms a clade with the tanager (Thraupidae) genera Hemispingus and Thlypopsis, and that Compsospiza, which often subsumed within present genus, is sister to that clade. A different study suggests that this species is most closely related to Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch (Poospizopsis caesar). Species name often misspelt "hypochondria".
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
hypocondria (d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837) - Andes of Bolivia from southern La Paz southern (including central Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz, western Chuquisaca and northern and eastern Potosí) to western Tarija.
affinis von Berlepsch, 1906 - North-western Argentina from Salta and Jujuy southern along eastern slope of Andes to southern San Juan and northern Mendoza. Also western Córdoba in winter.
