Subspecies
Molecular data suggest that this species' closest relative may be Blue Finch (Porphyrospiza caerulescens) and that both belong with the tanagers (Thraupidae). These two species are united by structure, bill shape, some aspects of coloration, and song, and both should probably be shifted to a new genus, for which the name Corydospiza is available (and has priority over Porphyrospiza). Subspecies form two groups, a northern group of smaller and darker subspecies (humboldti, bipartitus, bracki and excelsus) and southern group of two larger and paler ones (nominate and venturii).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • humboldti Koepcke, 1963   -  South-western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • bipartitus Zimmer, JT, 1924   -  Highlands of Ecuador south through coastal slope in Peru to extreme northern Chile (Putre, in Arica-Parinacota region).
  • bracki O'Neill & Parker, TA, 1997   -  Huallaga Valley, in central Peru.
  • excelsus von Berlepsch, 1907   -  Southern Peru (highlands of Arequipa and Puno) and western Bolivia.
  • venturii Hartert, 1909   -  North-western Argentina Jujuy south to Catamarca. Also Córdoba and San Luis).
  • alaudinus (Kittlitz, 1833)   -  Central Chile from Antofagasta south to region of Los Ríos.
