Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest, subtropical and tropical dry and moist shrubland, subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,400 m.
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Molecular-genetic data indicate that this species is most closely related to Golden-hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata), which is sister-species to both present species and Masked Tanager (Tangara nigrocincta). Taxonomic status of isolated lowland subspecies melanogaster and albotibialis may be worthy of investigation.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
- hannahiae (Cassin, 1865) - Northern Colombia (Sierra de Perijá and northern end of eastern Andes in Norte de Santander) and mountains of Venezuela (Andes from southern Lara south to Táchira, Sierra de Aroa, in Yaracuy, coastal cordillera in Carabobo and Aragua, and interior cordillera in northern Guárico).
- granadensis (von Berlepsch, 1884) - Andes of Colombia (western range south to Munchique area of Cauca, central range and western slope of eastern range from Santander south to north-western Cundinamarca).
- caeruleocephala (Swainson, 1838) - Colombia (head of Magdalena Valley in Huila, and eastern Andes in Boyacá and Cundinamarca and, on eastern slope, south to Nariño) southern on eastern slope to northern Peru (south to La Libertad and, Huallaga Valley, in northern San Martín).
- cyanopygia (von Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1884) - Entire western slope of Andes in Ecuador.
- cyanicollis (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Eastern slope of Andes in Peru (from Huánuco) south to Bolivia (to Cochabamba).
- melanogaster Cherrie & Reichenberger, 1923 - Isolated population in lowlands of Amazon drainage in central Brazil (northern Mato Grosso and southern Pará); recorded also in central Bolivia (Santa Cruz).
- albotibialis Traylor, 1950 - Veadeiros (Goiás), in east-central Brazil.
