Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest. From 1,100 - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
Southern subspecies fulvicervix sometimes treated as a separate species. The three northern subspecies differ markedly in plumage from southern ones, and more than one species may be involved. Subspecies amabilis may intergrade with inca in central Peru.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • ruficervix (Prévost & Des Murs, 1846)   -  Andes of Colombia on both slopes of western and central ranges (from Antioquia) and eastern range (western slope southern from Santander, and eastern slope from Cundinamarca-Meta border south to Cauca and Nariño).
  • leucotis (Sclater, PL, 1851)   -  Western Ecuador (south to El Oro).
  • taylori (Taczanowski & von Berlepsch, 1885)   -  Eastern Ecuador (south to western Loja) and extreme northern Peru (north of R Marañon, in vicinity of Cajamarca).
  • amabilis Zimmer, JT, 1943   -  Eastern slope of Andes in northern Peru (southern at least to Huánuco).
  • inca Parkes, 1969   -  Southern Peru (Juní­n south to Puno).
  • fulvicervix (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876)   -  Eastern slope of Andes in extreme south-eastern Peru (near Bolivian border) and Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rusty-naped Tanager (Tangara fulvicervix).
