Habitat
Humid broadleaf evergreen forest, degraded and edge habitats, including coffee plantations adjacent to primary forest. From 1,000 - 1,700 m.

Range (Guide)

Guatemala (B) (NB), Mexico (B) (NB).

Southern Mexico (Sierra Madre de Chiapas) and adjacent south-western Guatemala.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture, especially coffee plantations, is the main threat.

Habits
Highly social. Flocks of up to 26 birds have been observed.

Voice
A twittering and high-pitched 'sii' calls. A high-pitched 'wi sseeu' song.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Originally described under name Calliste sclateri, but that name is invalid, as preoccupied. On basis of plumage, habitat and voice appears most closely related to Grey-and-gold Tanager (Tangara palmeri).
