Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,350 m.
Costa Rica, Panama.
Pacific slope of Costa Rica (from at least Carara and San José) south to western Panama (Chiriquí).

Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. This species has been thought to form a superspecies with Fulvous-vented Euphonia (Euphonia fulvicrissa ).
