South-eastern Brazil (from Río de Janeiro south to central Rio Grande do Sul) and adjacent eastern Paraguay (Canindeyú south to Guairá and Itapuá) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones and Corrientes).

Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae.
