Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Recent genetic data indicate that Flame-crested Tanager (Islerothraupis cristata) and Yellow-crested Tanager (Islerothraupis rufiventer) are sister-species, with present species sister to both.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- nitidissimus Salvin, 1870 - Caribbean coast from eastern Honduras south to north-western Panama (Bocas del Toro).
- axillaris (Lawrence, 1874) - Pacific coast of Costa Rica (San José) south to Panama (western Chiriquí).
- panamensis Todd, 1917 - Central Panama (from Coclé) eastern on both slopes to northern Colombia and western Venezuela (Maracaibo region), and southern on Pacific coast to western Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru.
- flaviventris (Sclater, PL, 1856) - Extreme north-eastern Venezuela (Sucre) and Trinidad.
- luctuosus d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837 - Eastern base of Andes from Venezuela (Barinas) south to northern and central Bolivia, and generally from south-eastern Colombia, southern and eastern Venezuela (south of R Orinoco, and in Delta Amacuro and Monagas), the Guianas and Amazonian Brazil east to western Maranhío, south to Mato Grosso and western Goiás).
