Subspecies
Molecular data indicate genus is closest to Hemithraupis and Chrysothlypis. May form superspecies with Sulphur-rumped Tanager (Heterospingus rubrifrons) and often considered conspecific, but differs in morphology and plumage.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
xanthopygius (Sclater, 1855) - Eastern Panama (eastern Darién, including Tuira valley, Cerro Pirre, Cerro Sapo, Jaqué valley, and Serranía de Jungurudó) and east through northern Colombia (along northern base of western and central Andes, and southern in Magdalena Valley to Antioquia).
berliozi Wetmore, 1966 - Pacific coast of Colombia (from northern Chocó) south to west-central Ecuador (Pichincha and Chimborazo).
